Hello, all:

It was a mild winter in eastern Nebraska, with several flyable days. We didn’t fly all winter, as we place our aircraft in non-flying status from December through March to reduce insurance costs. Also, our tow plane has been in Loup City since late November for new fabric and paint on the wings, flaps, and ailerons, plus added inspection panels to support future wing spar inspections. With the fleet parked and the tow plane still away, we haven’t flown yet—but we hope to begin soaring soon.

To help pass the time this winter, we met as a club several times:

  • Early December: We held our year-end meeting
  • January: We marked and reviewed the glider-related sections of the FAR/AIM (Federal Aviation Regulations/Airmen’s Information Manual)
  • February: We discussed and compared portable flight computers and how they can be used while soaring in eastern Nebraska
  • March: We held our annual Safety Seminar

Club members have also been attending the monthly Blair Airport Authority meetings. Our airport lease requires us to attend at least one meeting each year and present a review of club operations, but we’ve continued attending to stay current on the airport’s expansion plans. We’re trying to organize for our annual clean-up—discarding unused items, addressing safety issues, organizing the hangar, washing the gliders, and filling critter holes in the grass strip runway. We also recently assembled a glider returned from New York after repairs for damage caused by a severe thunder and windstorm last summer.

So, although we aren’t flying yet, we have not been idle!

We hope to begin flying in the very near future.
