Hello, all:

What a gorgeous September day!  It reminded me of the Earth, Wind, and Fire song ‘September’ (with a slight modification):

Hey, hey, hey, ba-de-ya, say do you remember?
Ba-de-ya, flying in September
Ba-de-ya, never was a cloudy day!

It’s a joyous song, and it was a joyous day to fly!

We started the day at approximately 7:45AM, with Bud S launching Tom S and Sean F in the L-23 so it could be towed to the Millard Airport for their Aviation STEM event.  Frank M towed them the 16 miles to KMLE, where the L-23 released, landed and was met by Dave L, Jeff F, Sean S, and Jonathon F.  They manned our club display during the event and spoke with a nice group of visitors.  The glider left Millard at around 12:00 noon to return to KBTA for afternoon flight operations.

We flew six sorties in the afternoon.  The high temp was 67 degrees, winds were blowing from the northwest at about 8 to 10 knots, the humidity was low, and there were un-forecasted puffy cumulous clouds floating overhead in streets.  It looked like a good day for thermals to form northeast of the airport.  Today’s flights:

– Dave L flew a solo flight in the L-23.

– Liam S flew a solo flight in the 2-22.

– Mark F flew a solo flight in the partner owned 1-26B (S/N 379).

– Jeff F flew a solo flight in his 1-26B.  He found good lift near Blair and flew for over an hour.

– Mark flew a second solo flight in S/N 379.

– Jeff took prospective member Imanol S for a ride in the L-23.  Imanol is an active duty meteorologist with the USAF, and he’d like to earn his glider rating.  We can help!

It was a long day for most of us, and there were a lot of yawns by 5:30PM when we finally left.  We’ve got a month or two of good soaring weather ahead of us, and we hope to take advantage of the good days.  Come out and fly!

Safe soaring!
